3 Basic Emotional Needs
Seen • Heard • Understood
Understanding the person before attempting to reach the person with the Gospel.
01 Seen
“I am noticed. I matter. My story is worth paying attention to.”
Being seen involves recognizing the person beyond their circumstances, mistakes, background, appearance or current situation.
02 Heard
“Someone is willing to listen to me.”
Being heard means creating space for the person to express their story, questions, concerns, experiences and perspective.
03 Understood
“Someone is trying to understand what I am experiencing.”
Being understood goes beyond hearing words. It involves seeking to understand meaning, emotions, experiences, beliefs and the person's perspective.
Why These Needs Matter in Relational Evangelism
A person's heart is not reached merely by giving them more information. People often open themselves more deeply when they experience genuine human connection and know that they are being taken seriously.
Therefore, Seen → Heard → Understood can provide a relational access route for deeper conversation.
This does not replace the Gospel. Instead, it helps create a relational environment in which meaningful conversations about God, truth, faith, Jesus and salvation can take place.

TRUTH & GOSPEL
Jesus & the Samaritan Woman
John 4 provides a powerful biblical setting for studying relational engagement. Jesus entered into conversation with the Samaritan woman, engaged her personally and moved the conversation toward deeper spiritual truth.
Starting Where the Person Is
Relational evangelism begins by paying attention to the person and the conversation already taking place rather than forcing an unrelated message.
Natural to Spiritual Conversation
Explore how an ordinary conversation can develop naturally toward deeper questions about God, life, identity and spiritual truth.
Listening Before Speaking
Learn to listen carefully before attempting to explain, correct or persuade.
Meaningful Questions
Use thoughtful questions to discover what the person thinks, feels, believes and values.
Empathy in Evangelism
Seek to understand another person's experience while remaining truthful and faithful to the Gospel.
Building Trust
Develop genuine relational trust through consistency, honesty, respect and attentive listening.
